Before You Buy Custom Staircase Carpeting and Runners, Consider These 5 Points

Published / by admin

I’ve seen a lot of custom carpeted stairs, and I’m always impressed by the ultimate creative aesthetic that these one-of-a-kind installations provide. If you’ve ever contemplated working with a rug fabricator who is experienced in creating a bespoke pattern to your staircase, I have a few suggestions before you take the plunge.

Whether you’re having a runner placed or a whole wall-to-wall installation, I recommend developing a strategy to assist you execute the project on time and on budget.

Tip #1: Choose a design that appeals to you. Investigate the internet and, if necessary, dive deep. I’ve seen some fantastic staircase designs, and in reality, any design is possible; it’s just that certain ideas are simpler to combine than others. At first, be open to everything, then bookmark pages as you go. Check out,, and other rug-related websites. Get imaginative with your keyword research, such as stairwell designs, rug patterns, design illustrations, and area rugs, or narrow down your search to certain themes, such as animal print designs, tropical designs, or drawings, for example.

Tip #2: Make sure your rug fabricator and installer are qualified. Ask them a few questions, such as if they’ve ever worked on a project similar to yours. Is it possible to see any photos? Request a few layout options from the rug fabricator based on your design ideas. A design might flow down only one side, follow a random pattern, or be precisely positioned on each tread. The one place on the tread and riser where you don’t want any side seams (aka horizontal seams – vertical seams are fine) is directly at the pivot point. Each step has a tread and a riser, with the riser serving as the step’s real face and the tread serving as the actual step. A horizontal seam at the pivot point will most likely open up and grin when it folds over the step, which isn’t ideal. This may be prevented with smart planning… just be a bit forewarned.

Tip #3: Figure out what kind of installation you want: Will the carpet on the stairwell be laid as a runner or as a complete, wall-to-wall installation? If you have a great hardwood staircase, a runner-style installation can be a good option. The carpet would most likely be one piece, and a basic waterfall setup would suffice. You could even want to use ornate stair-rods to keep it in place.

Wall to wall installations, on the other hand, provide a wide range of possibilities. It’s possible that you’ll only have one wall and then a side wrap. You may also have a standard box staircase with walls on both sides. You’ll need to talk to your rug fabricator and installer about a few different alternatives. The idea is to figure out exactly how you’ll approach the installation. It’s possible that you have more possibilities than you realise!

Tip #4: Consider continuing the style into the second-floor hallway or rooms. Instead of an abrupt ending at the top of the staircase, I’ve seen ingenious designs that extend into the next room and softly taper off. I’ve also seen spectacular staircase extensions that flow over into the first-floor floor, performing the same function as a separate area rug. If done correctly, this may make quite a statement.

If you’re installing a runner, start at the top riser and work your way down, or proceed from top tread to bottom tread; this leaves the top and bottom risers exposed.

Tip #5: Don’t give up if you’re having problems finding a rug fabricator to complete your project. Look up ‘carpet workrooms’ or ‘carpet binding’ in your yellow pages online. You may also call your local carpet store and inquire about their products. If you prefer to keep it basic, a professional installer can possibly add a few of ornamental borders. If you opt to add borders, make sure the border widths are proportional to the total staircase width; for example, a small staircase need shorter borders.

As you’ve seen, there are a plethora of inventive ways to make your custom carpeted staircase just perfect. Consider how your guests will react when you throw your next party. A one-of-a-kind staircase is sure to leave a lasting impression.

In our discovery process, we’ve gone over a handful of the fundamental questions. Let’s go through the main elements again: Investigate design concepts; there are so many creative ideas to consider that this stage may be a lot of fun. Next, locate a competent rug fabricator and installation – a tip: look for the fabricator first, since they may also be installers. Consider your alternatives for installation; do you want to totally cover your stairwell? Or do a runner installation? Consider whether your design can be carried over into other areas of your home. Finally, if you’re having trouble finding a rug fabricator, look into web sources and local carpet retailers.
